Getting Started

Applying for nationally competitive scholarships is rewarding but also demanding. By their nature, these opportunities are attached to annual deadlines, dictated by external organizations. Moreover, because many of them also require institutional sponsorship, we maintain our own internal deadlines as a part of the nominating process. Our internal process draws upon the time and goodwill of faculty and other committed members of the Hunter College community to determine which of our students are best prepared to represent the College for consideration by scholarship-granting organizations each year. As a consequence, once you begin working with our office we will expect you to provide the information we need from you in a timely manner, to keep abreast of relevant deadlines, and to respond promptly to emails and other forms of communication during your application process.

In order for you to be aware of opportunities that speak to your intellectual growth and future success, we offer information sessions, one-on-one advising, and guidance through each phase of the application process. In working with our office, your mentors, and academic advisers, you will learn to “connect the dots” among the things you have learned in the classroom or laboratory, your extra-curricular activities, your employment, and personal biography. We will help you define your goals and articulate your aspirations. Even if your application does not result in an award, you will learn a great deal about yourself, your ambitions and capacities, and what you find meaningful in your work and interpersonal relations. You will also gain a greater appreciation for all the people in your network of support.

Our website abounds in information about individual scholarships, including criteria, philosophy, and deadlines, however, a critical feature common to successful applicants is forming a relationship with the OPS and creating occasions for us to know you and your interests. The best way to achieve this is to make an appointment to see one of us by following this link to SignUpGenius.
